Who is the Bully Now?

We hear a lot about bullying in the news these days and we probably all experienced bullying growing up or at least witnessed it. You may worry about it happening to your kids. You know how horrible it can make someone feel and the devastating effect it can have on how one feels about themselves and their ability to accomplish things.

But I wonder are you letting someone bully you now? Possibly someone you know very well, maybe your very own self?

With taunts like…

No one will buy from you.

You do not know enough to do that.

You look awful today.

Why haven’t you lost weight yet? You just can’t do it.

You are not good enough for that.

Why even try, you know you failed before.

You are not smart enough for that.

You cannot do it as good as ______.

It is all your fault.

If only you had _______.

What do you think, are you allowing a different type of bullying as an adult?

Isn’t it time we stopped tolerating this kind of bullying too?

Really Was I Speeding?

Really Was I Speeding?

Have you ever noticed how often you go faster than the speed limit? What is it about that speed limit sign that is never quite fast enough?

Well what about your self-imposed “speed limits” or limitations? Why do you stay lower than those?

Why not break your own limits as often as you do the ones on the road?

Could it be as thrilling? Could it create greater results and experiences in your life?

I Wanna Make Lots of Mistakes!

mistakesI want to make lots of mistakes. I just don’t want to keep making the same mistake over and over.

We are taught or conditioned that we need to get to this place where we make no mistakes. If you are learning, growing and trying things you have never done odds are you will make mistakes. The more things you step out of your comfort zone and try the more you risk mistakes. Keep doing the same thing again and again, going the same places the less risk of mistake.

Being willing to make mistakes doesn’t mean I won’t pay attention, put in hours of practice or try my best at what I do. It means I am willing to risk making mistakes to keep trying to stretch further and go outside my comfort zone in everything I do.

So mistakes are a natural part of the learning process that need not be feared. Learning from them gives you the opportunity to go even further the next time.

What do you think, does learning from a mistake make it worth it?

Do You Have the Courage to “Strikeout”?

You gotta be willing to strikeout if you want to hit home runs.

Have you ever seen someone doing something successfully and thought, I want to do that? How many people want to be Oprah?

But how many times do you give something a try only to hit a few strikes and decide it is not for you?
Or maybe you decide even before you try, you know it is not for you because (fill in the blank).

Have you ever asked Steven Spielberg or Tom Brady how many times they struck out? We often see the results and miss the process.

Fear of not being good enough, not doing or knowing the right thing, not (fill in the blank) keeps us from trying so many things in our lives.

What would you do if you knew striking out did not matter?

(Steven Spielberg applied to University of Southern California, School of Film three times and was not admitted. Tom Brady was a sixth round draft pick, the 199th player picked in the 2000 draft. Not exactly home run starts.)

What Do You Think Would Happen If You Just Didn’t JUST?

Imagine if you just didn’t say “just”. Could something so simple make a difference?

Yesterday, a colleague of mine, Carol, shared a story with me that was powerful and very helpful. When I thanked her, her response was, “Oh I am just passing on what I got from Joe.” You have probably used a response like this or heard it; it is a common response.

Consider what really happened. While attempting to credit the source, she didn’t receive the compliment; she devalued her efforts and the knowledge. Internally, her self-esteem also took a sub-conscious hit. Don’t get me wrong, crediting your source is admirable.

What if she said, “it is an honor to be able to share what I learned from Joe.”? That’s it; replace “I’m just” with “It is an honor”.

Now, the compliment is received, the efforts and the knowledge are valued and the source is still credited. Internally, her self-esteem grows.

So, what do you think would happen if you just didn’t say “Just”?

Do You Have the Wrong Equipment?

Could the wrong equipment be costing you?
Could the wrong equipment make the difference between success and failure?
Could the wrong equipment make the difference between pain and pleasure?
Using the wrong equipment can make all the difference in the world.

Could it be possible you have tried something you wanted to do and thought you couldn’t when the problem really was the equipment?

I did not realize just how important this could be until recently.

I loved the running shoes I had but it was time for a new pair.

The pair I had I chose by color and obviously got extremely lucky. This time I decided to go with the shoes that got the highest reviews. I ordered the pair with nearly 200 high reviews that are the highest rated brand for runners. While waiting for them I found them in a store on sale and picked up another pair. I was stunned when I got home and found out how uncomfortable I was running in them. So I returned them both and headed to the store to find the brand I had before. After trying on dozens of shoes I bought two different brands I thought would work. I was totally wrong. I made one mile in the first and was in so much pain I gave up, in the second I could not even run a mile.

At this point I was getting pretty frustrated. I was beginning to think i was never going to have a good run again. And if you’re wondering why I didn’t just buy ones like I had, they no longer make that style. So I tried one more time and ordered the newest model of the brand I liked. I ran with them as soon as I got them and had the best run ever, they are the perfect shoes for me. I felt like I was running on clouds, I could not feel a thing in my feet or legs. I almost forgot I was running. And it was all because I found the right equipment for me. I will now be ordering several more pairs so I have the right equipment for quite some time!

This experience started me thinking — could there be other areas I am struggling with the wrong equipment? Guess what, I found some in my business and I will write more about that in a follow-up post.

Is there something your struggling with that would be easier if you took the time to find the right equipment? Using the wrong equipment could be costing you.
