I cannot begin to tell you how many people I have spoken to recently who tell me with great enthusiasm how they have finally found their passion and purpose in life. Then, with a total lack of enthusiasm, they explain to me how much it is costing them because they believe in it and want to make a difference, but they have not found a way to work it that supports them.

It is not ok to be able to work your passion and purpose without making money! Making money does not have to be hard; money can come easy and you can have fun making money. It is ok to love what you do and make money. You can give and receive.

If you have found your passion and purpose, that is absolutely wonderful! If you have not created a way for it to support you, that is not ok. Ask yourself this, “Are there other people and/or companies doing the same or similar things profitably? Chances are the answer is yes, and that means something is holding you back from being in the same position. You deserve more!

Whatever holds you back has got to go—whether it is limited money beliefs, or fears which often masquerade as many other seemingly valid reasons. It is time for you to be successful! The time is now not only because you bringing your passion and purpose to life is important, the time is now because there are many other people that desperately need exactly what you have to offer. Your success helps others be successful as well.

What beliefs would you have to let go of to bring your passion and purpose to life so you can have a bigger impact? What would you have to be open to in order to have your passion and purpose bring money into your life and support you beautifully?

Do you think is it time for your passion and purpose to support you?

Would you read the story you are writing?

You are writing a story, your life story and your life story is important. The most important story you will ever have the chance to write. Have your ever thought about the story you are writing?

Would it excite you, would you be so interested you couldn’t put it down? Is it full of joy, does it have an impact, does it leave you thinking wow, that made a difference?

It is the biggest story you will ever have a chance to be a part of. Are you consciously writing it or are you thinking it is just being written and you are just playing a part?

I just finished reading “A Million Miles In A Thousand Years” Donald Miller and then a couple of days later I read this blog post by Chris Brogan. I highly recommend reading the book as a primer to thinking about just how you want your story to go.

Are you waiting for your story to get interesting? Are you thinking that someday it will? That maybe after this happens or that, it will get interesting or more enjoyable. Like when you have a better job or more money or the right partner.

Your life story gets interesting because you decide to consciously write a story that is interesting. Your life story has impact because you decide to consciously write a story that has impact. Your life story is full of joy because you decide to consciously write a story that is full of joy.

Your life is the story, you are the author. Make it one that excites you. Think about the impact you have the opportunity to make. Don’t let the story go untold. You have a chance to write a story that is full of joy. That impacts the lives of others, that is read and remembered for years to come.

Don’t wait to get started, there are no rewrites.

Could the wrong equipment be costing you?
Could the wrong equipment make the difference between success and failure?
Could the wrong equipment make the difference between pain and pleasure?
Using the wrong equipment can make all the difference in the world.

Could it be possible you have tried something you wanted to do and thought you couldn’t when the problem really was the equipment?

I did not realize just how important this could be until recently.

I loved the running shoes I had but it was time for a new pair.

The pair I had I chose by color and obviously got extremely lucky. This time I decided to go with the shoes that got the highest reviews. I ordered the pair with nearly 200 high reviews that are the highest rated brand for runners. While waiting for them I found them in a store on sale and picked up another pair. I was stunned when I got home and found out how uncomfortable I was running in them. So I returned them both and headed to the store to find the brand I had before. After trying on dozens of shoes I bought two different brands I thought would work. I was totally wrong. I made one mile in the first and was in so much pain I gave up, in the second I could not even run a mile.

At this point I was getting pretty frustrated. I was beginning to think i was never going to have a good run again. And if you’re wondering why I didn’t just buy ones like I had, they no longer make that style. So I tried one more time and ordered the newest model of the brand I liked. I ran with them as soon as I got them and had the best run ever, they are the perfect shoes for me. I felt like I was running on clouds, I could not feel a thing in my feet or legs. I almost forgot I was running. And it was all because I found the right equipment for me. I will now be ordering several more pairs so I have the right equipment for quite some time!

This experience started me thinking — could there be other areas I am struggling with the wrong equipment? Guess what, I found some in my business and I will write more about that in a follow-up post.

Is there something your struggling with that would be easier if you took the time to find the right equipment? Using the wrong equipment could be costing you.

How could you surf if all the waves were even? It would be impossible, however, surfing the low of the wave is difficult and challenging. The deeper the lows of the wave, the higher the high……surfing the low is tough but when the high comes…..ahhhhh, surfing the highest of the high wave is so worth it. Surfing even waves gives us no reference for that.

If every day was completely even life would get pretty boring. But our low days are not always easy to handle. How do you handle your low waves or bad days? Have you ever heard anyone say “I am feeling so good, how am I going to handle it?” Being happy “the high waves” are easy when things are going well, but every day is not like that.

When you are feeling good do you ever try to rationalize it away? Have you ever said something like “other people have it better than me so I shouldn’t be so happy?” But how often when you are feeling bad have you told yourself something like “some people have it worse than me so I shouldn’t feel so bad?’

Feeling sad or bad, i.e. negative feelings, is just as normal as feeling good or happy i.e. positive feelings. Denying, rationalizing, or even chastising yourself for knowing better or for not being more positive will not make it better.

So what can you do?

Be honest with yourself. Accept, identify and allow the feeling. Is it anger, grief, sadness, fear etc. This gives you the opportunity to move through it quicker without getting stuck in it. Denying it and being dishonest with yourself can create more emotional turmoil.

Identify what you are feeling it about. What is triggering the feeling? Sometimes it is not the actual event or problem the issue is deeper. Talking (not whining or complaining) with someone you trust or writing it out can help. Just letting it out can lessen some of the emotional pain and burden you are holding inside. Much as sharing a fear with a trusted friend can help you overcome it.

Give yourself the comfort and love that you would a good friend. Don’t just try to buck it up and tough it out. That’s not what you would expect your good friend to do. A hug, a comforting thought. Surround yourself as much as possible with things that make you feel better.

Don’t give up on your plans, ideas or dreams because of a set back or bad day. Just as high and low waves are a part of surfing, good and bad days are all a part of what makes life more interesting. Tap into your courage to make the most of the highs and the lows!

Be honest, do you have meeting or being on Oprah on your goals or vision board? Working with entrepreneurs and authors I have seen this at least 100 times and I am sure there are thousands more out there. I have also heard it many times from guests on my radio show.

Now, I completely believe in the power of goals, written goals and the huge difference a vision board or dream book can make. I have been doing them for over fifteen years and have the solid proof of the results.

The question is though, is meeting Oprah the WHAT or the HOW of what you want? If you just want to meet Oprah for the sake of meeting and talking with her then wonderful. Meeting Oprah is the WHAT and that is great. But I would guess there is more to what you want than that. If meeting OPRAH is HOW you think you will gain exposure, credibility, sales, etc…then you ARE limiting yourself. An important key for setting goals and making vision boards is identifying WHAT not the HOW.

“When you want something, all the universe conspires in helping you to achieve it.” Paul Coelho

A good example of the WHAT not the HOW is Lewis Howes, his WHAT was a career in sports, he started out as a record breaking arena football player but that ended quickly with an injury. At no time did he waiver from his WHAT even though he had no idea HOW it would happen. Two short years later he is Author of the LinkedIn Book “LinkedWorking”, Founder of Sports Executives Association and a highly sought after Sports Social Media Consultant. He never set out to write a book or form the largest network on LinkedIn, it all happened as a byproduct of his WHAT. Sitting home recouperating from his injury unable to play again he discovered Linkedin started networking and in a way it had not previously been done before created his successful sports career.

Absolutely set goals, make a vision book or board. But DON’T limit yourself, something bigger and better than Oprah could come along for you. You give it the opportunity to happen much quicker and easier if you decide what you want and allow the how to develop as you are working toward it. Have the courage to get WHAT you really want!

Lessons from Nature–Are you growing where you are planted?

There are so many lessons that can be learned from nature. Just while “growing” this post I came across a few great ones like growing an innovative company via invasive species, learning to go with the flow via the ocean waves, moving toward our goals via rabbits, and the difference between curing and healing via a dandelion.

One thing about plants is they grow everywhere, you can find plants in the ocean, in the desert, in the tropical rainforest and in the middle of a driveway crack. But the thing about a plant is this, planted in the right location it will thrive…in the wrong location and it will choke and die. Some different locations are very obvious; a tropical rainforest plant will most likely not survive in the desert. Much as a cold weather plant will not survive in a tropical location. However, some variations of location are much more subtle and not as easy to notice.

I happen to have a plant I love, I do not know its official name, I call it an elephant ear plant because it has huge elephant ear looking leaves.

I have grown this plant at the last four homes I have lived in. The very same plant, I have moved it with me. All four homes have been in the same basic Florida climate, the plant has weathered hurricanes, hailstorms, baking heat and this last winter more freezing weather than it can remember. For all intents and purposes you would say this is a very positive thinking plant, it survives pretty much anything.

At times this plant has been reduced to barely a single stalk when I have planted it in the wrong location, now this just may be a corner that was too sunny or to dry. Other plants were growing there but it wasn’t the right spot for it. I would replant the small dying stalk sometimes only ten feet away and it would quickly return to its abundant leafy glory. When it is really doing well, I have moved some of it’s off spring plants to give them room and again found there were certain spots it just did not thrive in. I may move three in a row, two thrive and the third didn’t but as soon as I relocated the third it began to thrive.

So, take a lesson from a plant, if you are not abundantly growing where you are, there is nothing wrong with you. You might just need a small shift; even if others around you are thriving while you are not, the “location” you are in may not be right for you. Don’t give up or think a major replant is necessary, start with smaller easier to make moves or shifts, you may just find your abundant growth was only a few feet away.

One moment of courage can change things forever.

Imagine the courage it took Rosa Parks to sit in the front of the bus. How many people do you think told her it was impossible? Maybe she should come back to “reality”. How many dream stealers do you think she might have encountered if she told people about her dream before she did it?

Imagine the courage it took the Wright Brothers to create a flying machine. How many people do you think told them it was impossible? Maybe they should stick with the “reality” of their little bicycle repair shop. If they had let their fear stop them where would we be today?

So how about you, what is your dream? Is fear holding you back? Are there dream stealers in your life telling you something you want is not possible? Maybe you should come back to “reality”?

How many dream stealers have you encountered? What are your fears built on?

Could a moment of courage make a difference in your life?

I am definitely getting too big for my britches….

Well not really but here is the thing…when I was a kid whenever I would start to get really excited about something or really happy about something I did, I was always told “Don’t get too big for your britches.” I am not sure what the motivation behind that was, but the lesson I heard was do not feel too good about anything because when you do, watch out, something bad will happen. This happens to be a common feeling, if you have not read the book “The Big Leap” by Gay Hendricks it is well worth your time. It reveals how we quite often sabotage our own great experiences for this very reason.

In any event, today I’m writing about getting too big for my britches because of a tweet. That’s right a tweet, so often we tweet away and never really realize what a difference it can make. But I had a totally different blog planned when I read a tweet by my amazing friend Rebel Brown @RebelBrown who tweeted a blog post by Joan Koerber-Walker @JoanKW asking the question “Can we have it all?” a brilliant blog post by the way which you can read here CorePurpose – Joan Koerber-Walker’s Blog — Can we have it all? and it got me to thinking. By the way, Rebel, Joan and I all agree.

That’s the moment I realized I was too big for my britches and it’s OK, I do have it all, that is MY definition of ALL. That what Joan said is right; that it is possible for each and every one of us to have it all. The only thing that keeps us from it is knowing what ALL is. You see, ALL cannot be defined outside of us; it must be defined inside ourselves. Having it ALL does not necassarily mean a family, a career, a house, two cars etc. as so often referred to in today’s media and society when the question is asked. Having it ALL is unique to each and every one of us.

Having it ALL is a journey NOT a destination. Here are a couple tips to help you on your journey and PLEASE feel free to share any tips you have in the comments below!

• TAKE ACTION – do not worry if it is the right one or wrong one toward your ALL just take the step you see and it will lead you toward the next
• BE WILLING TO ASK QUESTIONS – Don’t just accept what every one else says you should want or what the ideal is. You only get one shot at this life look for what feels right for you not others.
• LISTEN TO YOURSELF – Listen to your inner knower. It knows what is best for you and it may not be what others in your life like or think is best. Remember it is your life do what you know is right for you.
• KNOW THAT IT IS A PROCESS – It does not happen overnight and some of the steps you take may not be pretty. It is a journey not a destination, you are not going to arrive at perfection.
• TRUST – trust yourself

What is important is that you have the COURAGE to decide what having it all means to you. Then have the COURAGE to live it …. Have the COURAGE to get too big for YOUR britches.
